Hair care 101

Just like all skin types are different and require different care, hair is also one of those things that differ from person to person and needs a tailored maintenance routine. However, it doesn’t matter if you have curly hair, thin hair, dry hair, oily hair, or any other type of hair – certain hair care tips are universal, which is why we at Salon House have put together these top tips so you can start taking better care of your tresses.

  1. Washing hair with lukewarm water – whilst you might love hot, relaxing, scalding showers, that extra heat to your hair isn’t doing it any favours. The hot water strips your hair of essential oils, leaving it dry and brittle. To combat this try showering with lukewarm water, it does the same job of cleaning it while also saving you from some hair related grief. Bonus tip – try a quick rinse with cold water right before exiting the shower, this will seal your hair cuticle and give your hair extra shine.
  2. Shampooing and conditioning properly – A lot of people just lather their shampoo and conditioners all over their hair and wash them out. STOP! The shampoo is made for cleansing your hair but most of your effort with shampooing should be targeted on your scalp and roots, as this is where oil is produced and built up. This is what makes your hair greasy. Massaging the product on to your scalp and then gently lathering some onto your hair is the perfect way to make the most out of your product and how to avoid drying out your hair. Now, the opposite is true with conditioner. You want to focus conditioner from the mid-length of your hair down to the ends. Applying it to your scalp and roots can weigh your hair down and make it look lifeless.
  3. Keeping hair hydrated – Leave in conditioners and creams are hair-savers when it comes to hydration. They provide the much-needed nourishment and moisture to your hair all throughout the day. There is a world of products for you to try but at Salon House, we swear by the Kerastase Range of luxury hair products. They have a number of different leave in creams and serums that transform your hair over the matter of hours. We use their products in store and always recommend that our customers give them a go too. There are overnight serums that they make too, that you can put in your hair, go to sleep and see the magic in the morning.
  4. Deep conditioning and hair masks – all hair types can benefit from deep conditioning as it is quick and simple and does wonders for your hair. The same goes for hair masks, which can make the world of a difference to your hair and aren’t time-consuming or damaging. Kerastase carries a great range of deep conditioning hair treatments and masks that can be purchased here at Salon House or if you’d like a more intense treatment and/or pamper, you can always book an appointment with us so we can work our magic on your hair.
  5. Trimming those split ends – they’re not pretty, they’re not healthy and they can’t be salvaged so why not get them snipped right off so you never have to think of them again. But on a serious note, split ends occur over a period of time, either due to damage or ill-treatment and what happens is with wear and tear, your hair cuticle is worn down, exposing the inner cortex. This is what results in split or frayed ends of your hair. The best way to tackle this is to just book some time with your hairdresser and get ‘em chopped off. Your hair will instantly look fuller and healthier and you can go about your day looking fabulous as always.
